Plimoth Plantation Thanksgiving Dinner

Yesterday, for Thanksgiving, I went to Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, MA. On Thanksgiving, they have several meals available, I chose the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. You are assigned to a table and served family style. During the meal, people dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans were walking around. The Pilgrims performed a traditional prayer and sang a hymn. We started out with an assortment of breads, cheeses, raw vegetables, nuts and apple cider. Next, we had split pea soup with ham in it. It was very good! Then, each table was given a turkey, stuffing, a vat of mashed potatoes and squash, gravy, turnips, beets and onions. In the middle of the meal, "Abraham Lincoln" delivered the Proclamation that made Thanksgiving a national holiday 150 years ago. Finally, for dessert, we had the option of Indian pudding, apple pie or pumpkin pie. At our table we met people from all around the United States. Our meal included admission to the Native American Settlement, Plimouth Plantation, and the Mayflower II. The Native American settlement is a recreation of a homestead of the period and it is staffed with people of Wampanoag descent who appear in traditional clothing. They explained their heritage and gave demonstrations of traditional farming, fishing and homebuilding techniques. They also have a Craft Center where people demonstrate pottery making, wood working, sewing, and quill and feather working. It was a very fun day!
